The Blue Door Mediterranean Greek restaurant in Jubilee Hills review
Ambiance : Great ambiance and well designed interiors, apparently done
by the owner's wife herself. A total Mediterranean look, lovely white
plastered walls and of course their iconic blue door. They had a private
dining area as well as an outdoor seating with a misting system. The
whole space screams Mediterranean!
The brainchild of Balram Narayankar (an IIM (A) product), and his wife Saloni, who has also designed the fab interiors, The Blue Door has a fresh elegant appeal, without trying too hard.
Decor
We loved the use of colors in the interiors. Walking through the turquoise door, (which lends the restaurant its name) one enters the indoor dining area, with its pristine-white rugged textured walls, white and beige upholstery and laminated table tops with a rough edge. Color turquoise is repeated in the upholstery and cushions in a pleasant sit-out area, as well as in the uber cool glass bottles to serve drinking water.
Cuisine
A good place to know authentic Mediterranean (especially Greek) food, up close and personal, as in-house chefs Yannis and Stefanos have come all the way from Athens! We start with the healthy Sardines on the grill, with a tomato and parsley dressing, followed by Mutton Chops served with a yoghurt dip. For vegetarians, there is Zucchini Kefte (koftas as we know it, but lighter and unaccompanied by the heavy-duty curries we are used to!) and Eggplant Bourekia, (pastry filled with grilled eggplant), served with a tomato garlic dip. All the starters are enhanced with a dips platter (beetroot, eggplant and hummus), or Tzatziki, that absolutely delish yoghurt-cucumber-garlic dip ! We also try the vegetarian Greek Salad, (tomato, cucumbers, capsicum, onion, olives and feta cheese in a lemon olive oil dressing), which turns out to be crunchily addictive. Moving to mains, we are served Stuffed Chicken (chicken breast stuffed with potato and asparagus), served with white wine sauce and sautéed broccoli, and the taste is divine! So is the Prawn Moussaka, an improvised version of the popular moussaka, usually either with minced meat-eggplant or just vegetarian (available on menu). Every morsel of the potato, eggplant, zucchini and prawns in Napoli sauce gratinated with Bechamel, is worth savouring! There is Chicken Frikasse, cooked with spinach and celery in a lemon-egg yolk sauce, which is soul food, with its light broth-like feel. Innovative is the Mutton Eggplant Shoes (there is a veg version too), eggplant filled with mutton kheema and gratinated with feta cheese. For vegetarians, a main course is Yemista, baked green and red peppers stuffed with a rice-herb filling, just okay. For desserts, instead of the tried-and tested Baklava, we try Ravani with Lime, traditional syrup cake with (zest of) lime flavour and Grape Spoon Dessert, traditional Greek syrup dessert with grape, both served with vanilla ice cream. Delicious endings!
